In the Room Where It Happens: Generative AI Policy Creation in Higher Education
by Esther Brandon, Lance Eaton, Dana Gavin and Allison Papini, May 29, 2025 (Educause Review)
In December 2023, the authors explored what it would take to develop a robust and meaningful policy for generative AI's use in higher education. Since then, institutional AI policy development has fallen short of their expectations. They have found (through direct observation and discussions with others) that colleges and universities generally are not prioritizing a diverse range of stakeholders in the decision-making process. This article provides additional guidance and direction to those who may want to get involved in—and invite others to join—conversations about the role of generative AI at their institutions.
Making AI Generative for Higher Education: Adoption and Challenges Among Instructors and Researchers
by Clare Baytas and Dylan Ruediger, May 1, 2025 (Ithaka S+R)
In Fall 2023, Ithaka S+R launched a collective research project with the objective of studying generative AI’s impact on teaching, learning, and research at the postsecondary level. This resulting report focused on answering the following questions: to what degree are instructors and researchers adopting generative AI, and how is this changing their approaches and practices in teaching and research? What challenges are they facing in the aftermath of generative AI’s emergence? What kinds of support have they benefited from, and what kinds of support do they still need?

Assigning AI: Seven Approaches for Students, with Prompts
by Ethan R. Mollick and Lilach Mollick, June 12, 2023 (SSRN)
The authors propose seven approaches for utilizing AI in classrooms. The aim is to help students learn with and about AI, with practical strategies designed to mitigate risks such as complacency about the AI's output, errors, and biases. By challenging students to remain the "human in the loop", the authors aim to enhance learning outcomes while ensuring that AI serves as a supportive tool rather than a replacement.
