Law Journals & Publications Resources: Perma.cc

This guide is intended to assist journal members in locating print, PDF, or page image versions of cited materials for sourcing assignments.

What is Perma.cc?

Permalinks (permanent links) are strongly encouraged to be used in journal articles citing to online resources as seen in The Bluebook (Rule 18.2.1.(d)). A study conducted in 2013 found that more than 70% of law journals, and 50% of the URLs found within United States Supreme Court opinions are broken and no longer link to the originally cited information.

When a user creates a Perma.cc link, Perma.cc archives the referenced content and generates a permalink to an archived record of the page. Regardless of what may happen to the original source, the archived record will always be available through the Perma.cc link.

Perma.cc is developed and maintained by the Harvard Law School Library in conjunction with university law libraries across the country and other organizations in the “forever” business.

Creating a Perma.cc Account

Anyone can create a Perma.cc account, but these accounts only allow the user ten (10) free permanent links (permalinks) at which time the user would need to sign up for a subscription through Perma.cc.

However, an affiliated academic library can provide access to users that gives users the ability to create an unlimited number of links. Luckily, Loyola Law Library is an affiliated academic library with Perma.cc.

To request a Loyola Law Library-affiliated Perma.cc account, please contact your Journal Liaison.

Individual accounts will cease being affiliated with the Law Library upon graduation or separation from Loyola Law. The permalinks you made with account will still be active and accessible, but you will need to purchase your own subscription to create any additional permalinks.

Creating a Permalink

After creating your Perma.cc affiliated account, creating a permalink is quite simple.

  1. Go to https://perma.cc
  2. Log in with your Perma.cc credentials
  3. Copy the web address of the page you wish to cite to in your paper
  4. Enter that URL into the bar underneath Create a new Perma Link

5. Click 'Create Perma Link' button
