Career Success Resources Guide: Getting Started

This guide collects and organizes print and electronic resources that may assist law students and alumni in beginning and maintaining a happy and meaningful career in law.

Vault.com

Vault is a subscription service provided by the LUC Law Library. Vault provides tools for researching, finding, and evaluating employers in the legal industry. Career resources available in Vault include: law firm rankings and profiles, practice area Q&As, industry and career guides, résumé and interview tips, and legal career blogs.

Vault's 30+ career guides include titles such as:

  • Vault Guide to Summer Associate Interviewing & Top-Ranked Programs
  • Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms
  • Practice Perspectives: Vault’s Guide to Legal Practice Areas
  • Vault Guide to Law Resumes

Vault access is available only to members of the Loyola Chicago Law School community by creating a personal account with your current LUC email. To create an account, click on the 'Get Started' link and then click on the 'register now' link at the bottom of the page. Provide your LUC email address and fill in the information on the next page and click on 'Create Account'

Locating Additional Library Resources

Not every Library resource is listed in this guide. The LUC Library Catalog is where you'll find a record of every book, e-book, set of books, and journal (by title) in LUC libraries.  The Library Catalog also provides access to many but not all titles that LUC provides access to via subscription databases.

Searching by the following subject headings is another way to locate relevant resources.

About this Guide

The purpose of this guide is to connect students and alumni with Law Library resources on securing a job in and succeeding in the legal profession. Resources are divided, roughly, by topic. There may be overlap.  For example a text on lawyer marketing may have a section on young lawyers and a text on succeeding as a young lawyer may have a section on marketing. This guide provides links to both print resources available through the Law Library as well as to many online resources.

This guide is intended as a complement to the resources available through the Office of Career Services which helps law students and alumni assess career goals, explore the many and varied applications of a legal education, and make the transition from school to a professional career or career enhancement through services such as:

  • Career Counseling
  • Interview Preparations
  • Resume and Cover Letter Review
  • Access to Job Fairs
  • Judicial Clerkship Information
  • On-line Job Postings and Career Resources
  • Speakers and Practice Area Panels
  • Career-Related Publications, Newspapers, and Websites

Additional Online Resources

Resources from Commercial Services

  • The Career Resources page on BloombergLaw provides links to Bloomberg resources for locating an employer, preparing for an interview and landing an offer.  It also includes links to Bloomberg directories and advice on networking, marketing and surviving law school. Students can access the Career Resources page from the main Law School homepage under Law School Resources

Magazines and Newsletters

  • ABA Journals available through HeinOnline are a rich source for articles on careers and employment.  Among these are:the ABA Journal, Law Practice and Student Lawyer. In addition, National Jurist, self-described as the magazine for law students,  has many excellent articles on legal employment and career success.
