State Courts, Statutes and Regulations: Books

A guide to primary authority at the state court level

About

Selected books accessible through the Loyola Law Library are linked from this page.  To find an item in Loyola's collection which is not on this list, please use Loyola's online catalog.  To find materials on particular legal topics in a given state, use the Advanced Search mode in the catalog and select "in subject" from the drop down menu to search for a subject heading that includes both the geographic and topical elements.  Some suggested examples are:

Civil Procedure--Illinois.

Legal Research--Iowa.

Torts--New York.

Trial Practice--California.

In the alternative, you can browse the shelves in the Library.  Generally, Illinois materials are shelved on the 3rd floor at call number KFI ----.  Materials relating to the other 49 states and the District of Columbia are shelved on the 5th floor at the call number range KFA through KFW (the 3rd letter of the call number is the first letter of the name of the state), although you should be aware that our print collections for the other 49 states are minimal.

To locate books in libraries outside the Loyola University Chicago System, use the WorldCat database (valid Loyola ID and password required).

The National Reporter System

The National Reporter System, published by the West Group, St. Paul, Minnesota, is the most comprehensive collection of the decisions of the appellate courts of the states and each of the courts of the United States. Ten reporters cover the 50 states and the District of Columbia. These reporters, each of which is in its second or third series, include the following: Atlantic Reporter (A., A.2d); North Western Reporter (N.W., N.W.2d); Pacific Reporter (P., P.2d, P.3d); South Eastern Reporter (S.E., S.E.2d); Southern Reporter (So., So.2d); South Western Reporter (S.W., S.W.2d, S.W.3d); California Reporter (Cal. Rptr.); Illinois Decisions (Ill. Dec.); and New York Supplement (N.Y.S., N.Y.S.2d).  The various regional reporters are indexed by the Decennial Digest, which covers all 50 states, and various regional and state digests.  The law library has print copies of all of the regional reporters.  Most are shelved on the 5th floor, in the northwest corner of the library.  The California Reporter and New York Supplement are shelved with the other California and New York materials.  Illinois Decisions is on the third floor, at Call No. KFI 1247 .A33.  The library subscribes to all of the regional digests, each of which is shelved directly next to the relevant reporter, on the 5th floor.  We also subscribe to various state digests, shelved with the relevant state materials on the 5th floor, in the KFA-KFW ranges.  The Illinois Digest is shelved on the third floor at Call No. KFIKFI 1257 .W4.

State Legal Research Guides

The law library has a number of legal research guides to various state jurisdictions, as follows. Most of these items are shelved on the Law Library's 3rd floor, in the Law Library's Reference area. Some are available on the 5th floor, with the other state law materials in our collection; we have indicated those items with a "Law Main Stacks" designation.
